Land For Wildlife
Land for Wildlife is a national program which operates across South-East Queensland to support land owners and conserve wildlife habitat.
Within South-East Queensland, Land For Wildlife is supported by councils like Redland City Council and coordinated regionally by SEQ Catchments (non-government organisation).
Land For Wildlife is a free voluntary program for owners of properties that are vegetated with retained or revegetated bushland.
It aims to encourage and assist private landholders to provide habitats for native plants and animals on their property, even though the property may be managed primarily for other purposes.
Importantly, being a registered Land For Wildlife property will not change the legal status of the property in any way.
Benefits to landowners include:
- A sign to place on fence or gate to show that property is participating in habitat protection
- Technical advice on wildlife habitat management from a Land For Wildlife Extension Officer
- An information folder with technical notes, giving practical advice about habitat protection
- Quarterly newsletters
- Incentives available to landholders to manage their wildlife habitat
- Free field days
Qualifying for LFW
- Generally properties need to be larger than 1ha in size
- Manage part or all of their property as habitat for native plants and animals
- Intergrate nature conservation with other land uses (eg tourism, grazing)
- A 'working towards' registration category is available for landholders who do not qualify for full registration at the first property visit.
- Neighbouring properties may join together and apply for a group registration.
Financial assistance for Land for Wildlife program
Landholders are invited to apply for Land For Wildlife financial assistance to undertake natural resource management works on private property. The funding period commences July 1 2009 and finishes June 30 2010. As funding is limited, financial assistance is capped to a maximum of $750 per property. Please note that financial support is given by way of supply of materials and contract labour.
