Wetland Garden

Wetlands are fascinating places for nature lovers. They are full of ferns, frogs, fish, flowers and abundant life.

Characteristic wetland plants are melaleucas or paperbarks. These plants have wonderful character with their peeling bark and gnarled and twisted limbs.

Wetlands are highly important ecosystems in the lowland and coastal environments of the Redlands. With the complex interaction of the basic components of water, soil, animals and plants, their many functions and products have sustained humans over centuries.

Wetlands provide water purification and flood mitigation function, where they act to slow water flow, allowing retention and assimilation of pollutants and suspended sediment. Below the earth’s surface, wetlands often recharge groundwater reservoirs.

They also provide diverse and unique ecosystems and hence act as reservoirs of biodiversity. They are important breeding and nursery areas for many species of birds and fish.

These areas offer important tourism and recreation value.

Wetlands can help to reduce runoff and erosion in problem areas on a property. They can be a useful and attractive way to solve drainage and flooding problems.

Wetlands will also reduce the amount of pollution leaving your property through trapping nutrients and sediment before it enters nearby sensitive waterways.
